heel-painAccording to a study conducted by scientists at Guangzhou Dongsheng Hospital and Guangzhou Social Welfare House, acupuncture is an effective treatment for heel pain. Sixty-six patients with some developed form of heel pain were used as a part of the experiment directed by researcher Xu Xuemeng and his team. The control group was compromised of participants that were given experiment drugs and the rest of the patients were given a filiform acupuncture needle treatment.

Within six months, the participants that had received acupuncture had an effectiveness rating of 97% while the effectiveness rating of the control group was just 76%. Acupuncture has been especially effective for those suffering from Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis.

Causes of Heel Pain

• Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

• Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

22-year-oldCarl Griffithsof Britain is unable to play for his rugby club because he is unable to find a pair of boots that fit his size 21 feet. For the past 3 years, Griffiths played for Trimsaran rugby club with size 18 boots. His toes would curl up at the ends his shoes, which have finally fallen apart after being held together with black sticky tape. Griffiths has yet to find a sports club that makes size 21 boots, causing the player to seek out outside help to find boots in his size. “Not being able to play because of not having shoes is just aggravating,” Griffiths stated.  “At least when you have an injury, you know you just can’t play for a while. But when I’m out just because of not having shoes that fit, it’s just really frustrating.”

FDA approves New Nail Fungus Treatment Jublia

study 2The U.S. Food and Drug Administration have approved a new nail fungus treatment called Jublia, and is the first treatment that can be applied directly to the nail. Jublia is a topical treatment specifically for people with the condition onychomycosis, which is a nail infection caused by a fungus that typically occurs under toenails. Made by Canadian company Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc., Jublia (efinaconazole) comes in a liquid form and is applied directly to the nail. The pharmaceutical company states that the treatment’s FDA approval was based on two studies involving over 1,600 people with onychomycosis. In one study cure rates were about 18 percent for patients, whereas rates were about 15 percent in the other study.

Toenail Fungus Treatment

 

Toenail fungus is a problem which affects many people and is hard to get rid of. Fortunately, there are several methods to go about treating toenail fungus.

Antibiotics & Treatments 

Lamisil – is the most commonly effective treatment for toenail fungus. It is available as an antibiotic Terbinafine tablet and cream. Terbinafine is a chemical component which kills fungal growth on the body.  Applying regular doses will gradually kill the fungal growth. It is important to keep the area clean and air free. 

 

Talcum powder – applying powder on the feet and shoes helps keep the feet free of moisture and sweat.

Runners can benefit from a Post-run Stretch

Runners who exercise daily will often suffer from sore or painful feet. While a daily foot massage is ideal, it is also not always possible. After their daily run, runners should instead consider removing their sneakers and socks to perform foot stretches, which can help soothe the muscles in their feet. While kneeling on a yoga mat or carpet, tuck the toes toward the knees and slowly lower the pelvis to the heels. This position should be held for at least thirty seconds before slowly lifting the hips off the heels. The toes should then be pointed away from the knees before sitting back down on the heels to stretch the tops of the feet. This can be repeated two or three more times to optimally stretch the feet.

Stretching Your Feet

From increasing flexibility to even providing some pain relief, be sure to give your feet a stretch from time to time. This is especially important for athletes or anyone performing aerobic exercises, but anyone experiencing foot pain or is on their feet constantly should also engage in this practice.


Good ways to stretch your feet are:

  • Crossing one leg over the others and carefully pull your toes back. Do 10-20 repetitions and repeat the process for each foot
  • Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
  • Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle

 

Individuals who tend to their feet by regular stretching every day should be able to minimize foot pain and prevent new problems from arising.
